Ville Platte Funeral services for Mrs. Valerie Lafleur Soileau, 85, will be held Friday, June 22, 2007 at 3pm in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Evangeline Memorial Park Cemetery. Fr. Gene Tremie will officiate the services.

Mrs. Soileau, a native and resident of Ville Platte, died Wednesday, June 20, 2007 at her residence.

Upon graduating from Ville Platte High School, she and her sister Carmen attended Ursuline College in New Orleans. Valerie majored in music and took some courses at Loyola. Having completed two years at Ursuline, Valerie then attended LSU in Baton Rouge, where she graduated. She began her career in the public school system as a band director in Vidrine, but she found her true calling as a high school English teacher. She transferred to VPHS and taught English there for some 30 years. Testimony from hundreds of her students over the years reveal that Valerie was an inspiring teacher who demanded excellence from her students no matter what their capabilities.

Survivors include three sons, Thomas Y. Soileau, Stewart Soileau and wife, Susie; and Guy Soileau and wife, Kitty all of Ville Platte; one daughter, Louisa Soileau DeVille and husband, Douglas of Ville Platte; one brother, Dwight Lafleur and wife, Flo of Ville Platte; two sisters, Carman Fruge of Ville Platte and Claudia Hamilton of Ponca City, Ok; three grandchildren, Marilyn DeVille of New Orleans, Haley Soileau and Ryan Soileau both of Ville Platte; one great grandchild, Wyatt Salters of Ville Platte.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Yves Duffy Soileau and a grandson, Douglas Anthony Smokey DeVille, Jr.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 21, 2007 from 4pm until 9pm and on Friday from 8am until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7:30pm on Thursday.
