Funeral services for Shirley Miller, 92, will be held Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.
Ms. Miller, died Sunday, February 15, 2009 at 9:35 a.m. in Lafayette. She was a graduate of Ville Platte High School then attended LSU received her teaching degree from Southwestern Louisiana Institute ULL. She started teaching at Bayou Chicot High School. Throughout her travels as the wife of an Army dental officer she taught in American Dependent schools in England, Germany, and Okinawa. While in New York she taught at the Jewish Foundation School on Staten Island, N.Y. She also taught in Vernon Parish and retired from James Stephens Elementary School in Ville Platte. She was an avid golfer, gardener and certified by the Japanese Ikebana Society in floral arrangement. She had served as president of the Ladies Auxillary at the Ville Platte Country Club, she was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution Opelousas Chapter and had served as Regent and she was a member of the Cajunettes of Ville Platte. She was instrumental in the organization of the first Girl Scout Troop in Evangeline parish.
A loving mother and grandmother, she is survived by her son, Dayton Joseph Miller and wife, Carmen E. of Houston, Tx.; two daughters, Jane Olivia Miller of Youngsville and Sarah Arden Miller Loftin and husband, Mark of Oxford, Ms.; three grandchildren, Dayton Justin Miller, Elizabeth Ann Miller, and Margeaux Olivia Miller; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Dr. Dayton Miller, Jr.Lt.Col Retired US Army of Little Rock, Arkanasas. They were married November 16, 1935 in Athens, GA while attending an LSUGeorgia football game. The daughter of: Dr. B.A. Soileau and Lena Roberts Soileau; brothers, Dr. Gordon E. Soileau and John Soileau; sister, Mrs. George Edward Bargie Bacquet, Sr.; and granddaughter, Stacey Arden Ackerman.

Family request that visiting hours be observed Tuesday, February 17, 2009 from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. and again on Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. until time of services. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
