Robert “Bobby” Helmer, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. A celebration of life will be hosted by Bayou Chicot United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 30th, with visitation beginning at 9:00 am until the time of the service at 11:00 am.
Bobby was born on July 12, 1951 to Laurant and Eudora Helmer. He was raised in Bayou Chicot along with his six siblings and remained in his hometown until his recent passing.
When Bobby was only 16 years old, he met his one and only love, Janice Marie Joubert Helmer. He dedicated 52 years to his beautiful “bride” and most of all, his best friend. Together they built a wonderful life, raising their 2 beautiful daughters, Julie Christine and Jessica Lynn. His greatest accomplishment was that of a father, grandfather, and uncle. His grandchildren were the glisten in his eyes and the grin on his face.
After graduating from LSU with a degree in education, Bobby spent his entire career as a teacher and coach at Bayou Chicot High School where he retired after 30 years. After retirement, he took pride in flooring work. He was a jack of all trades and a master of them all too. He enjoyed carpentry, fishing, hunting, and gardening, but most of all he enjoyed cooking for his family.
“Bobby”, ”Popa”, “Uncle Bob”, “Otis” was a man of integrity, honesty, and loyalty. He had an alluring wit about him so he made many friends during his 72 years here on this Earth. His presence will be missed by all but his legacy will live on through his children, his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, special friends, and all who were blessed enough to be a part of his journey.
Bobby is survived by his wife Janice Helmer of Bayou Chicot, his two daughters, Julie and her husband, Roy Paul and Jessica and her husband, Jacob Brady; and six grandchildren: Lauren Paul, Daniel Paul, Seth Paul, Nora Brady, Helen Brady, and Ruby Brady.
Also left behind to cherish his memory are his brother and sisters, Bennie Helmer (Ellen), Muriel Aline Self, Candy Griffith (Cody), and Donna Fontenot (Randy); and stepsister, Connie Pitre. He will also be deeply missed by his beloved Joubert family.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Laurent and Eudora Helmer, stepmother, Wilda Helmer; and sisters, Linda Brunet and Francis “Johnnie” Allen.
