VILLE PLATTE A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, March 16, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Rite of Committal to follow in the Evangeline Memorial Park Cemetery, both in Ville Platte, for Mabel Vidrine Reed, 97, who passed away at her home on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. Visitation will be held at Ardoins Funeral Home of Ville Platte on Thursday, March 15, 2012 from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A Rosary will be recited in her honor Thursday evening at 5:00 PM. Visitation will resume on Friday, March 16, 2012 from 8:00 AM until time of the service.
Mrs. Reed was born September 29, 1914 to Aimee Soileau and Alcidus Vidrine in Grand Prairie, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by dear parents, her beloved husband of sixtythree years, Oscar Reed, three brothers, Howard Vidrine, Allen Cooz Vidrine and Bruce Vidrine. She leaves behind her adoring children: Dr. Dale Reed and his wife, Theresa, of Ville Platte, Kenneth Reed and his wife, DeeDee, of Abilene, Texas, Oscar Reed, Jr. and his wife, Rosie, of Lafayette, Dr. Don Reed and his wife, Elaine, also of Lafayette, Andrew Reed and his wife, Karen, of Morgan City, Ron Reed and his companion, Gayle Prejean, of Carencro and Jan R. Foret and her husband, Charlie, of Arnaudville. Also left behind to mourn her passing, her brother J.B. Vidrine and his wife, Annie. Her memory will most certainly be cherished by her sixteen grandchildren, twentysix great grandchildren and one greatgreat grandchild they were truly the light of her life, she lived everyday to its fullest for her precious family.
Mabel graduated from high school in Grand Prairie, La. She attended the former S.L.I. where earned a teachers certificate. She then went on to retire from the classroom after teaching in St. Landry and Evangeline parishes for thirtyfive years. She instilled a love of learning in many young children as they began their school years.
The Reeds raised their family in Basile, La., where she was an active member of the St. Augustine Catholic Church community and a valued member of the Ladies Altar Society.
Upon their retirement, the Reeds moved to Ville Platte, where they continued their service to others by visiting patients weekly at the local hospital for five years. She was an active member of the Catholic Daughters at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Parish. Mabels faith was an important part of her life she enriched her faith by participating in Bible study classes and enjoying a beautiful and deep prayer life.
Her family was the very center of Moms life she was happiest when she was with her husband, children and, of course, her grandchildren. No one can duplicate her wonderful fudge, which was a family favorite. How she loved seeing her family enjoy her special homemade treats. Moms devotion to her family and faith will serve as a powerful example for all those lives she touched.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Bubba Reed, Chuck Reed, Jay Foret, Ben Reed, Mike Reed and Dr. Ashton Reed. Honorary pallbearers are grandsons, Danny Reed, Jason Reed, Max Reed and Adam Reed. Lectors will be granddaughters, Susan Holden and Mary McShan. Gift bearers will be granddaughters: Sister Malia Grace Reed, Sally Saloom, Myra Sanchez, Shelley Stelly, Amy Thorguson, Rachel Wagenspack and Christina Comeaux.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the entire staff of Hospice of Louisiana for their loving care and Mabels Care givers: Martha, Camelia, Cathy, Harriet, Bertha, Ellen and Gertha. Their gentle hands meant so much to Mom and her family during her last days.
