Hazel D. Ortego was born in Washington, Louisiana on June 30, 1926 to Brunier and Eula Phillips Delafosse. She was a licensed LPN for over fifty years having retired from the Ville Platte Hospital and the medical office of Dr. Taussin. Hazel was known in her neighborhood for her delicious homemade bread, that she enjoyed baking and sharing with neighbors, and her yard which was decorated with the many day lilies that she took pride in growing. She also enjoyed going to the casino and playing the "little machines" as she called them. During her time at Heritage Manor Nursing Home she loved participating in all the various activities and was named "Most Active Mother" and "La Reine" (Louisiana Cotton Festival Heritage Manor Queen 2017). Hazel was a very loving and caring person her entire life. She referred to the bed bound residents at the nursing home as "her patients" and would check on them every day. Hazel will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all that knew her.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Fuselier and husband Kenneth of Ragley and Brenda Latour and husband Woodrow of Whiteville; one son, Paul Richard Ortego Jr. and wife Lisa Ortego of Ville Platte; two brothers Ray Delafosse and Don Delafosse; and two sisters Pauline Fontenot and Myrtle Landreneau. Also left behind to cherish her memory are her six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren.
Hazel is preceded in death by her parents Brunier and Eula Phillips Delafosse, husband Paul R. Ortego, Sr., and daughter Carol Ann Ortego.
The family requests that visitation be observed at Ardoin's Funeral Home in Ville Platte on Sunday, June 24 from 3:00 PM until 10:00 PM. A rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM by her nephew, Deacon Chuck Ortego. Visitation will continue Monday from 8:00 AM until time of service.
