Ville Platte mourns the loss of a cherished community member, Bess O. Fontenot, who passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2024 at the age of 99. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Ville Platte at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow in the Sacred Heart Cemetery with Father Tom Voorhies officiating services.
Born on Tuesday, March 31, 1925, in Ville Platte, Bess devoted her life to serving others with unwavering kindness. Throughout her career, Bess touched the lives of many. She worked tirelessly with the youth of the parish through the 4-H program, bringing joy and knowledge to countless young minds. Her compassion knew no bounds as she also dedicated her time to caring for the elderly in assisted living facilities and nursing homes. One of her most memorable contributions was leading the rosary in French at Heritage Manor Nursing Home for many years. Additionally, Bess offered her clerical talents to various businesses in Ville Platte, leaving a lasting impact wherever she went.
Bess's commitment to her faith was evident in her membership with the Catholic Daughters for over 60 years and her active participation in the Sacred Heart Ladies' Altar Society. A devout Catholic, she found solace and strength in her Come Lord Jesus groups.
Described as loving, caring, and incredibly organized, Bess paid close attention to detail that ensured everything under her care was executed flawlessly. Her meticulous nature enriched every project she undertook and left a mark of excellence.
Bess leaves behind a legacy of compassion, service, and grace. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her including her daughter, Debby Davenport (James) of Lake Charles; son, Ricky Lavergne (Ann) of Ville Platte; and four grandchildren, James Davenport (Jennifer) of Omaha, Nebraska, Douglas Davenport (April) of Lake Charles, Erik Davenport (Amber) of Dallas, Texas and Laura Kiper of Madisonville. Also left behind to cherish her memory are her 11 great grandchildren, Hans, Hugo, Victoria and Avila Kiper, Douglas and Wyatte Davenport, Claire and Olivia Davenport, and Jeremiah, Evelyn and Lydia Davenport and her sister, JoAnn Christ of Opelousas.
Bess is preceded in death by her husbands, Henry “Ton” Lavergne and Benny Fontenot, Sr.; parents, Douglas and Josephine Ortego; brothers, Luke, J.D., Norman, Ralph, and an infant brother; and sisters, Lois Little, Beverly Faul, Neva Arnold Gloria Leger, and Merle Wyble
In honor of Bess's memory, let us reflect on her shining example of love and generosity that will continue to inspire us all. Visitation will take place on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Ardoin’s Funeral Home in Ville Platte beginning at 8:30 AM. A rosary will be prayed at 10:00 AM and will be led by members of the Catholic Daughters.
The family kindly requests that donations be made to the Sacred Heart Foundation in lieu of flowers.
