VILLE PLATTE Allen Louis Fontenot passed away at his residence surrounded by his family on Tuesday, July 30, 2013. He was 81, a native of Plaisance, La. and resident of River Ridge, La. Proceeded in death by parents: Adiluse and Elizabeth Saucier Fontenot and siblings: Emily West, Carrol Guillory and Calvin Guillory. Survived by siblings: Ivy Ortego, Gursie Roberie and Paul Fontenot Lela Mae Fontenot, stepsons: Todd Allred Daphne, Martin Allred, Bradley Allred, Terry Allred and grandchildren: Sarah, Sabrina, Tony, Jessica, Nathan and Christian, best friend: Carl Straight, his daughter, Stephanie Cardwell, Edith Theriot and numerous nieces, nephews and family.
Allen was a pioneer and iconic local musician within the Cajun music industry. He was instrumental in bringing authentic Cajun music to New Orleans in the early 70s. He spent most of his life promoting Cajun music with extended travels and concert tours throughout the U. S., Mexico and Canada. He produced several Cajun albums and appeared in movies, hosted popular local radio shows and made numerous TV appearances including: Good Morning America and Austin City Limits. He performed annually at most Louisiana festivals including: The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, where his band entertained thousands of fans for 37 consecutive years, an accomplishment held only by three other local musical entertainers. He received numerous awards for his contribution to Cajun music and was considered, The King of the Cajun Fiddle. Mr. Fontenot was an active member of the Cajun French Music Association CFMA, American Legion Baton Rouge Chapter, St. Jude Childrens Hospital and a member of St. Matthew the Apostle Church in River Ridge, La.
At the request of the Fontenot family visitation will be held at Ardoins Funeral Home of Ville Platte beginning at 6:00 PM Sunday, August 4, 2013 and remain open until 9:00 PM that evening and resume at 9:00 AM Monday morning until 11:00 AM. A Rosary will be recited in his honor at 7:00 PM Sunday evening. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the Ardoins Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 AM with Rite of Committal to follow in the Old Ville Platte Cemetery with Fr. Mitchell Guidry as Celebrant.
